THE MANAGEMENT OF CONFINED ANIMAL WASTE, (on Very Large CAFOs), AND DEVELOPMENT OF EXCELLENT HUMUS FOR SOIL BUILDING (Have you read the story, "The Emperor's New Clothes," lately?) I have been thinking, again. The serious problems created by trying to manage the manure wastes which collect at large hog confinement facilities, confined poultry facilities, and large cattle confinement sites, presents a great opportunity. Certainly, some folk are seeing the confined animal feeding issues as very problematic, but we see great possibilities! Great opportunity is found in making wise choices. We have discovered that making a choice to separate and aerobically process the solids, (composting the very beneficial organic matter), is a choice which benefits people on all sides of the issues. Being a clear thinking, truthful, right thinking, reasonable person, you probably do not think it makes sense to try to solve the present animal waste problems with public relations campaigns. You are probably thinking that there must be a way to change behaviors, apply critical thinking, employ known and workable/simple/sensible scientific measures, and find ways to benefit all. Perhaps you were thinking that there has to be a win/win way to solve the waste issues which have been created by confined feeding of poultry, confined feeding of cattle, confined feeding of hogs, and other such processes which are now causing significant environmental impact in several states. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? Some folk still think it is smart to deny there is a need. A few legislators are even trying to deny some farmers rights to file legitimate anonymous complaints against the worst offenders. ORGANIC FECAL WASTE FROM LARGE HOG PRODUCTION FACILITIES ABSOLUTELY CREATES HAZARDOUS ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS. Elected officials can not legislate away the scientific facts. Local, state, federal elected representatives can not solve the CAFO waste problems by making new laws or changing existing laws and regulations. Excellent waste management practice and applying common sense at the site of confined animal feeding and in the "farm neighborhoods" will solve most of the problems. http://www.farmweb.org/index.htm READ Pulitzer prize-winning news stories about organic waste issues. It is hard to believe that people who appear to be fully grown-up, adult, smart, positioned leaders, major producers, employers who provide many jobs and benefits to communities, and representatives of large groups of citizens think that they should not admit the problems. Advertising would have us believe that all is OK. IGNORING THE PROFIT POTENTIAL Sometimes I recommend to a client, "Let's get ahead of the regulators, and convert this wonderful organic matter before it becomes damaging waste." I thought this was a great idea! I thought the integrators and the growers would proceed with brilliant action, to convert waste and make extra profits from taking action to make excellent product and protect the environment. Some did. My own product was distributed throughout the continental USA. The product was excellent! The profits were great! Several of my clients and former clients are still making excellent products from what was once just a massive collection of animal fecal matter, endangering the environment. Trident Environmental Services and Technologies and John Wear, Consultant, remain ready to help solve the huge problems being caused by failure to appropriately manage large quantities of organic wastes. We enjoy waste conversion opportunities. Our successful experiences solving such problems began in 1974. We have been working with agricultural producers for over thirty years. Success is a matter of record. We can not help anyone hide the real and pressing problems which obviously exist, but we can help establish the changes necessary to solve huge problems. No organic waste challenge is too large for our methods to cure. We are eager to help. This is what we do. We are ready to help, anywhere. ABOUT THE ARTICLE "FIGHTING LEGISLATIVE HOGWASH:" NOTICE: This article has to do with the very large confined animal feeding facilities where manure wastes create continual hazards to the people who work at the site, the neighbors, nearby communities, the animals, and the entire natural environment nearby. (Refer to NRDC Fact sheets concerning CAFOs) Senate Bill 709, State of Oklahoma, the irresponsibly conceived document which puts forward the idea that all animal waste is nonhazardous, is a piece of work which clearly indicates that some of our elected representatives are giving in to influence peddlers. Kurt Robinson's article in the Sunday, March 25, 2007 Oklahoman, correctly reminds readers that the subject problem of waste manure is a problem of tremendous hazard. (Refer to studies and news stories about Murphy's Hog Farms.) There are legal limits regarding quantities of phosphate, ammonia, nitrate, and other substances in manure waste which is held in lagoons or discharged into fields, streams, rivers, and may be kept in a manner whereby it remains likely to discharge in a heavy rain or may be subject to poor lagoon management.) A waste conversion system makes it impossible for such contamination to happen. Converting the waste to excellent humus product will bring an end to such hazard potential.) ========================================================================================================= The story in the National Hog Farmer publication may illustrate some good intent, and a behavior change... but, has Murphy made necessary corrections? Has Murphy apologized? Have the huge hog factories really ceased polluting???? Not all the "hog factories" are in violation of law...BUT: Fact is, the contents of the subject wastes from MANY confined animal feeding operations are creating hazards in the environment and are certainly hazardous to human beings. Public health is at risk, when huge quantities of animal fecal waste are allowed to collect untreated, and are stored as untreated waste which can blow into the air and wash/drain into water. The arsenic, E.Coli bacteria, and a long list of developing contaminants are always brewing in the huge quantities of animal fecal waste where no waste conversion is applied to solve the problems. Trident Environmental Services and Technologies, Inc., knows about the hazards of such wastes. We convert CAFO wastes to excellent products, while defending/protecting the environment, the waterways, the air, the people from the hazards of CAFO animal fecal waste. WASTE C O N V E R S I O N IS NEEDED ! (Waste conversion, not just waste disposal...) Doing the right things and making excellent profit, we proceed with excellent waste conversion, we take charge and focus on our professional and heart-driven responsibilities. We make excellent profit as we take these issues away from the lawyers, from the PR pundits, and the others who are presently just making money with words and influence, without making legitimate decisions or legitimate progress for anyone but themselves. Expensive Public Relations Programs & Political Posturing Will Not Solve the Present Problems! The PR "magicians" can not advertise the environmental challenges away. We solve the problems by excellent waste conversion practice. We make products which provide profits to cattle producers, hog producers, poultry producers, and others who generate large quantities of organic by-products. Is someone playing politics with your excellent opportunities? Are you investing thousands of dollars in advertising, perhaps knowing that the public relations advertisers are telling lies, half-truths, or presenting incorrect information about you, your facility, your methods? Do you really intend to pay someone to develop and present lies to protect you through methods of public media. The media methods may not protect violators from appropriate prosecution. (Clearly, such media methods should not protect any violators from appropriate prosecution, if prosecution is required.) An appeal to integrators and producers: Please don't invest those hard-earned dollars in false advertising. The facts always surface. WASTE CONVERSION will solve C A F O manure problems. Advertising will not solve the biochemical problems which are being caused by failing to convert huge quantities of waste. Convert the manure to compost! Produce an excellent humus product that can serve you and your neighbors. PRODUCERS, LET'S TELL THEM TO GET OUT OF YOUR BUSINESS! CLEARLY THEY KNOW HOW TO PACKAGE AND PRESENT A STORY, BUT CONSIDER THE FACTS. ACTUALLY, THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO. I WELCOME DEBATE, TESTIMONY OPPORTUNITIES, SEMINAR INVITATIONS. Please call me to schedule a time and location. Trident Environmental Services & Technologies, Incorporated John Wear; Telephone 918-399-2909 |

Excellent Materials, Excellent Composting Practice, Excellent Soil Feeding and Excellent Compost Tea by John Wear (SEE ADDITIONAL COMMENTS PUBLISHED BELOW THIS ARTICLE) I was thinking about the qualities of soil, fertile soil, the kind of soil that looks good, smells good, works easily, supports plant growth, allows roots to extend deeply, and supports substantial population of earthworms. I was just enjoying digging in healthy soil. The soil I am thinking about is the soil that is maintained under that field of healthy grass shown in the photo behind this page. The small acreage behind my house, is composed of soil which has had quality organic matter added periodically for over a year. I also sprayed some compost tea on a few "bad spots." Once again, we see an example of the naturally fed field returning great value. No applications of industrially produced fertilizers were used in this effort. The field has had only loving attention, focus on stewardship, compost concentrate, a return of organic matter which grew on the acreage, and some spot treatment with active aerobic compost tea. Looks like it's about time for a "truck garden" with about two acres of high-energy vegetables. The qualities of viable soil: Before humus can be stabilized in soil, the field of soil has to have a certain "structure value." Excellent compost concentrate is a perfect amendment to help us attain stable humus and therefore excellent "structure value." We want to employ fertility-enhancing processes that ensure chelation and osmosis can occur without damaging or interrupting seed opening and root feeding processes which are natural to the developing plants. Preparing the soil by using gentle and natural methods keeps soil healthy. Our goals include developing healthy compost, healthy soil, healthy plants, and healthy people. Well composted soil, will surrender balanced nutrients to plants growing in such soil. Mineralization, made possible by humic and fulvic substances, (including humic acid & fulvic acid), makes the energizing of health-giving plants possible. Synthetically fed soil and plants can not develop or release to us the values we need. The qualities of ROOTZONE compost concentrate: Excellent compost concentrate will have clearly definable characteristics. In well made compost and compost concentrate, weed seeds will not be present, damaging microorganisms will not be present. There will be no odor of sulfide. There is no "stink" to true compost concentrate. Until compost concentrate is used, it should be maintained aerobic with a moisture content of somewhere between 15% and 30%. ROOTZONE compost concentrate has been watched carefully from the time it was just a blend of high quality by-products until it passed the tests defining it as true compost. The entire mass should have been developed mixed, turned, kept aerobic, and the carbon/nitrogen ratio should have been about 30 to 1; or very near that ratio. Compost concentrate and premium compost will have cycled through the thermophilic process, in which temperatures reach at least approximately 125 degrees f. to 155 degrees f., such temperature control will allow purification without oxidation of nutrient values within the mass. The combination: As soil nutrient balance is important, so compost nutrient balance is vital if the compost concentrate is to provide value to justify the cost of collecting materials and processing. The microbial life in the compost is the most valuable factor. Active, alive compost concentrate makes possible active aerobic compost tea. When applied to soil, such living values help us to maintain life in soil, year after year, crop after crop, without "wearing out" the land where we grow our food. |
Building our soil naturally makes it possible for us to produce year after year without causing compaction. |
Applying excellent compost concentrate to our fields, helps us maintain friable and energetic soil. Plowing becomes much easier, so we save on equipment costs. |
